Is it better to be kind or firm?

Join us Wednesday, April 20 to learn how being kind and firm helps parents get to the core of a child’s misbehavior. Positive discipline offers techniques that work to establish strong relationships and thinking, responsible children.  This informative and useful presentation is based on the Positive Discipline Program by Jane Nelsen Ed.D.


Michele Tryon, MA, BS, CCLS is a certified child life specialist and certified Positive Discipline™ educator. She is a nationally recognized trainer/consultant for Nurturing Parenting Programs® and co-author of The Nurturing Program for Parents and Their Children with Special Needs and Health Challenges© Michele is community outreach coordinator for The Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, is co-chair of the Hampton Roads Parenting Education Network, and is a member of the best practice committee for Virginia Statewide Parenting Education Coalition.

Get Your Game On – for SOLs!

Learning gamesWe will have “Make and Take”  SOL review games for parents on Thursday, March 10th from 6 to 7 p.m.
Students coming with their parents  can make a $3.00 donation to  “play” with Mr. Kulp  in the gym as a closing event for Hoops/Jump Rope for Heart.
Our Partners in Education from businesses and churches, including our LHS Readers will be volunteering to help us!
Parents are required to RSVP so we will be able to make the proper number of games supplies.  Each grade level will have an assigned location for parents to come by and make their respective game.
Please let us know you’re coming so we will have enough games for your child/children. Call the Kilby Shores office at 934-6214 or email  Karen Jones, karenjones@spsk12.net and provide the following:
  •   Name (s) of students
  •   Grade (s) of students
  •   Teacher

Aloha Study Island

Study IslandAloha or welcome to Study Island!  We hope you got as excited as the students have over this new program.

Students in grades 1- 5 have already been introduced to Study Island in the computer lab and shoulld be fairly familar with it now. It’s a great way to provide interactive activities for your child to do and the teacher can focus on specific areas for each student – or give the whole class an assignment!

Please take a few minutes to check out the Study Island Parent Information, and then be sure to log into the program with your child. Parents can check progress and print out work sheets to assist your child for the upcoming SOLs. Have fun learning together!

“Tips to Tweet About”…SOLs

tweetKilby Shores Elementary is hosting a parent information night following the PTA meeting on Tuesday, April 8th. Come out at 6 pm and get testing tips and information about upcoming SOLs and end of the year testing.

Every teacher from each grade will be on hand to provide grade level study guides, materials, and resources in order to best prepare students for testing success! So come on out and enjoy an evening dedicated to improving student success!

Light refreshments will also be served! Hope to see you there…6pm, Tuesday at Kilby Shores Elementary School!

Sites for SOL Success – Thursday!

sites for successJoin Mrs. Floyd after the PTA meeting on Thursday, February 6th for “Sites for Success”. Go home with the resources you need to get your students online to study for the SOL’s.

Come enjoy a tutorial for parents and help your child prepare for the SOL’s. Learn how to use various websites to help your child prepare for the SOL test. See sample test questions and learn ways your student can practice for the SOL tests at home.

Tyson Chicken

Tyson Chicken Guy smDid you know Kilby Shores collects the labels from Tyson Chicken products? We sure do! Many of the Tyson Chicken products have specially marked “Project A+”  labels you can cut out and bring into the school. When you bring these Tyson labels in they support our students and our teachers, by helping to purchase needed supplies for your students education.

Every label turned into Kilby Shores can be redeemed for 24 Cents!  That’s the biggest return on investment the school can get and that’s a huge benefit for your student!

The Tyson A+ labels can be found on a large variety of their boxes and bags. Please see the BOX example to the Right:

Talented Artists – SPS Video

Box Tops for Education

box tops 2Bring us your “Box Tops” from specially marked boxes, packages and even the plastic wrap on Kleenex!  Cut them out of the packaging and simply drop them in the “school bus” by the kiosk at Kilby Shores – it’s that’s easy. All the students know where Box Top Bus is!

Box tops can be found on a tremendous number of products and the number keeps growing. Look for the pink box top on items such as cereal boxes, baking items, frozen foods, dairy products and more.

Taking part is easy and tracking Kilby Shores’ progress is just part fun to be found  at  http://www.boxtops4education.com/all-about-boxtops   Here you can also enter contests to win bonus box tops, get high value coupons and even shop online – it’ll benefit the school too! Not to mention you’ll also find a  complete list of “Box Tops” products.

“Box Tops” are collected year round and if you don’t have time to cut the box top out, that’s okay – just tear off the whole area and send it in with your student. We actually have a box top committee and that’s just a small part of what they do to support Kilby Shores and our students.

Talented Art Students Caught!
