Learning through Design

Stepping through the design process
Posted on 10/02/2019

Students do more in the library than just check out books!  Students listened to the story "The Most Magnificent Thing" by Ashley Spires.  After the story, students learned about the Engineer Design Process and discussed how the character in the story followed the steps to be successful.

The next week when the students returned to library, they were faced with "The Marshmallow Challenge".  Using the steps of the Design Process, they had to build the tallest freestanding structure possible using 20 pieces of spaghetti, tape, and string.  Then their structure had to support a marshmallow on top.

The lesson taught the importance of cooperation, thinking about the problem, and forming a solution.  Students quickly learned how important the steps of brainstorming and sketching their plans were.
